Mammography Services in Birmingham, AL
At Brookwood Women’s Health, we believe mammograms are so important that we offer them here in our office for your convenience. You can schedule your mammogram on the same day as your annual gynecology exam.
Mammography is a special form of imaging using low doses of x-ray to produce a detailed image of the breast. It is important to have a baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 to 40 and have a yearly mammogram starting at age 40 so the radiologist can detect the slightest changes in breast tissue over time.
Why is it important to have a mammogram?
Early detection increases the chance of successful treatment and survival. Mammography detects approximately 85% of all breast cancers, sometimes many years before a lump can even be felt. It is the only exam approved by the FDA to help screen for breast cancer in women with no signs of the disease.
What kinds of mammograms do you do in your office?
A traditional mammogram creates two-dimensional images of the breast. A newer type of mammogram called a 3D mammogram (breast tomosynthesis) creates three-dimensional images of the breast. We offer both options here at Brookwood Women’s Health in Birmingham.
Will the exam be painful?
Although some patients experience slight discomfort, the compression decreases the x-ray dose to the breast and allows better visualization of the tissue in the image. You should feel pressure, but no significant pain.
When will I receive my results? What if my results come back abnormal? At our facility we email our patients (unless requested otherwise) informing them of a normal result within 7-10 business days. If the results show anything concerning that the physician wants to further evaluate, our Patient Care Coordinator will be in contact with you to schedule the appropriate testing.
How do I schedule a mammogram?
Since we have a Mammography Department in our Brookwood office in Birmingham, you can schedule a mammogram for the same day as your yearly appointment with the physician. To schedule your mammogram appointment, call our office at 205-397-8850.
We look forward to seeing you at your next visit!
Steps you can take to reduce your risk of breast cancer
Breast cancer affects millions of women worldwide. While you can’t change some factors, there are proactive measures you can take to lower your risk.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Excess body weight can increase hormone levels and the risk of breast cancer. Adopting a
balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight.
Limit Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol can raise estrogen levels, contributing to an increased risk. Try to limit your alcohol intake to reduce your breast cancer risk.
Stay Physically Active
Regular exercise not only helps maintain a healthy weight, but also reduces the risk of breast cancer. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week.
Breastfeed if possible.
Breastfeeding has been shown to have a protective effect against breast cancer.
Know your family history of breast cancer.
Genetic factors can increase your risk.
Stay informed and consult with your doctor at Brookwood Women’s Health. Remember, these steps don’t guarantee prevention, but they can help to reduce your risk of breast cancer.
